» Japan’s Contribution for “Pacific Environment Community” to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat

Today, on 16th December the Government of Japan aligns its commitment to the declaration “Pacific Environment Community”(PEC) which was adopted by the Leaders of Japan and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in PALM 5 held in Hokkaido, Japan in May 2009, by providing funding assistance worth 6.8 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 66million US$).

Pursuant to the outcomes of PALM5, in particular Annex 1 to the Leaders Declaration, ‘The Pacific Environment Community’, the Leaders of Japan and the PIF highlighted the vital importance of working together to address and respond to environmental issues including climate change, to support the sustainable development of Pacific island countries and outlined their commitment to enhance and deepen cooperation in equal partnership in the from of the PEC.

The Leader of the PIF welcomed Japan’s plan to provide 6.8 billion yen worth of contribution to the PIF as part of the Cool Earth Partnership to be utilized to address environmental issues including climate change, in support of national and regional priorities and frameworks and the programmes of Pacific regional organisations, including through appropriate Japanese environmental technologies.

The contribution of 6.8 billion yen will be used to cover projects with a focus on the provision of solar power generation systems and sea water desalination plants in line with the PEC, and will start on receipt of the contribution until the funds are expended to the full satisfaction of the Government of Japan and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Japan values the friendship ties with the Pacific Island countries and will be committed in enhancing partnership with the Pacific region with its continued support and assistance.
